Coimbatore: The residents of Jeeva Nagar staged an agitation in the District Collectorate on Monday after electricity was disconnected to their houses built on poromboke land issue. During which they surrendered their aadhar and ration cards.

The aggrieved residents alleged that Corporation has disconnected electricity to all the houses in theit area and warned to disconnect water supply, shortly.

Jeeva Nagar is located just off Mettupalayam Road next to the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation office. For over 45 years, more than 200 families have been living in 2.71 promboke land.

The residents allege that "Since 1990 they had been paying for the land in installments to the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board. And, that most families have paid around more than 50% of their installments to TNSCB for registration of the land in their name. In this scenario, the TNSCB has alloted us alternate housing at Keeranatham housing board and demand us to vacate our houses", noted the residents.

The residents in their petition noted that they will not vacate their area unless they are provided alternate housing near their current dwellings. "Shifting over to Keeranatham, which is off corporation limits will affect our livelihood", they said.
