Water had been opened into the PAP canal for irrigation purposes from the Thirumoorthy Hills for 94 acres of land from Thirumoorthy Hills to Vellakoil. In the past few days, at one of the branches of the canal in Avinashipalayam, dead fowl were discovered floating in the waters. The public in this area accused shop owners in Palladam of being responsible for dumping dead fowl into the canal, thus polluting the water.
The farmers allege that the water could not be used for agricultural purposes too. "This could affect the sanitation of the area and lead to outbreak of diseases. So, officials should take necessary actions as early as possible," urged the farmers.
