Sterlite to remain closed: SC sets aside NGT order on reopening of Sterlite Copper Plant

The Supreme Court (SC) has refused to allow the re-opening of the Sterlite plant, setting aside the National Green Tribunal (NGT) order which had allowed the reopening of the Sterlite plant.

The Supreme Court (SC) has refused to allow the re-opening of the Sterlite plant, setting aside the National Green Tribunal (NGT) order which had allowed the reopening of the Sterlite plant.

The SC said that the company can seek an urgent hearing of the case in the High Court. Earlier in its order on December 15, the NGT had set aside the State Government’s order of closing down the Sterlite plant against which had been appealed in the SC. Ahead of the verdict, security was beefed up in Tuticorin with 1600 police personnel deployed in the area.

In May 2018, people had taken to the streets in protest against the Sterlite plant. 33 people had died when police opened fire on the protesters.
