The Nilgiris: In a training exercise, students of history department of Ooty government college were tutored on the process of handling and cleaning of sculptures and artifacts at Ooty government museum.
"Regular maintenance is very crucial as accumulation of dust is abrasive, attracts pests, and discolors the surfaces of the artwork. Regular cleaning protects the timeless artifacts for future visitors", said Murugavel, Museum in-charge.
He added that the students were given appropriate tools including soft brushes to clean the dust. A mixture of cooking soda and spirit were used to polish the sculptures and protect them fungal infestation.
In addition to the galleries, the collections storage areas were also cleaned, Murugavel noted.
Commenting on the cleaning exercise, a student said "It was a new experience for us as we got to learn the history of the artifacts of extreme historical importance.
We were given intensive training in art handling and sculpture cleaning".
