In the vein, today UYIR has announced the launch of modern traffic signals in Coimbatore with advanced CCTV cameras. The salient features of these Cameras are Capturing and Recognition of number plates, Night vision light, Capturing the road rules violators and Controlling the speed.
One of the effective methods to control the Safety violators are to use latest technology dynamically and make every citizen know that they are under strong surveillance and they cannot escape the Eagle eye of the Police Department. This CCTV Camera can work under less than LUX light in the night and the Number plate Recognition can capture the vehicle moving at high speed.
The First phase of infrastructure installation and Activation of the modern traffic signals will inaugurate by our Honourable Minister Thiru.S.P.Velumani, Minister for Municipal Administrations, Rural Development and Implementation of Special Programmes on 16th February at 6pm at Anna Silai. The first phase of modern traffic signals installations were done at JM Baker Junction, LIC Junction, GKNJunction, Anna Statue Junction, Lakshmi Mills Junction
Model Traffic Junctions
As per Police information available, each year Coimbatore City alone has more than 350 deaths due to traffic accidents and many more nonfatal ones.
Over-speeding and lack of discipline in maintaining safe practices of driving were the main reasons for these traffic accidents to occur. If speed could be regulated and indiscipline in driving practices was curtailed, then the accidents could be reduced drastically.
The Industry Institutions vertical of UYIR Trust and the Police Department evaluated the total cost required to put in place speed barricades, speed breakers, lane markings, lane dividers, reflecting cat-eyes, additional signal lights along with electronic equipment such as number plate recognition cameras, surveillance cameras and video recorders, solar UPS at traffic junctions to enable functioning of these electronic equipment during power outages and body-worn cameras for the Police monitoring important junctions.
Coimbatore City Police have mapped the complete area of the City boundaries. A study of the information revealed that these accidents occurred over 130 locations, but surprisingly nearly 45% of the accidents occurred in only 40 locations mainly on the arterial roads such as Avanashi Road, Trichy Road, Mettupalayam Road, Sathyamangalam Road, Pollachi Road and Palghat Road.
If the total 130 Junctions had to be covered, the cost would be more than Rs.15 Crores. In Phase 1, UYIR Trust and Police decided to concentrate on the 40 Junctions where nearly 45% of the accidents occur. The cost also was a manageable Rs.5 Crores. The learnings from Phase 1 could be improved upon and extended in Phase 2 to the other locations.
To start with, it was decided to concentrate on 5 Junctions in a stretch of Avanashi Road - J.M.Bakery Junction, LIC Junction, Anna Statue Junction, GKNM Hospital Junction and Lakshmi Mills Junction and make them model junctions in line with what is available in developed countries.
Using advanced software and these Cameras, the Model Junctions can be made intelligent to adjust the traffic signal timing to maximise flow of traffic, make it safe for pedestrians to safely cross roads as well as identify motorists who are not wearing helmets as well as those who are breaking traffic rules by capturing the number plate details including location where it occurred, date, time, etc. and directly transfer this information to the Police Control Room. This will enable the Police to raise Fine Challans. For repeat offenders, the licence could even be cancelled like it is prevalent in advanced countries.
This to a large extent will enforce discipline in the Motorists and go towards reducing traffic accidents.
In addition, the Police Control Room can monitor the junctions on a live basis and regulate the time required for the individual traffic signals to be On based traffic density on the main roads and cross roads thereby making the signals intelligent and increase the through-put of vehicles. In emergencies, for Ambulances to pass through continuously from the Control Room itself, a temporary green corridor can be set up.
