Coimbatore : While city motorists are struggling to drive maneuver vehicles even at the bare minimum speed through the pothole-ridden city roads and its innumerable speed brakes, some private bus operators are on 'race mode' driving across the city at lightning speed.
Passengers and public alike have been left with a nerve-racking experience by these private bus operators who flout almost all traffic rules, courtesy, the traffic police who are mere spectators on the roads allowing them to go unchecked.
In one such incident, the video of a private bus operator rushing through Hopes College signal toward Singanallur has jolted the public who accuse the traffic police for letting the bus overspeed in one of the most crucial arterial roads.
On February 11, Bus no S29 TN 66 P 3773, a private bus plying between Thudiyalur and Singanallur flouted all possible traffic rules like over-speeding, overloading of passengers, skipping bus stops as well as loud continuous honking.
The irate public and motorists who witnessed the incident captured the video of the bus in which passengers were stacked not knowing that they were possibly caught in a 'death trap.'
"No doubt, the bus was rushing at 60-80 kmph on Avinashi Road which is one of the busiest roads in the city. Neither the passengers nor the public are safe due to these overspeeding buses. Avinashi Road has many signals and at every signal there is a traffic police who has failed to stop this bus. Shockingly, at least a dozen passengers were standing on the foot board, " said Kamaraj an eye-witness to the private bus cruising at a neck-breaking speed. He also added that the Regional Transport Officer should revoke the driving license of such private bus drivers and levy fine on the bus company for their utter indifference and callousness.
Motorists opine that officials turning a blind eye to such drivers only goes to show complete disregard for the safety of the public.
"We are also considering mandatory use of speed governors to control these private bus operators from speeding. However, the lack of man power in the department does not allow us to be present everywhere in the city," lamented an official source from the Traffic Police Department.
