Coimbatore : The 12-day-long leisure outing of Chinnathambi in the agricultural fields of Udumalaipet is to end soon anytime as the Madras High Court has allowed the Tamil Nadu Forest Department to bring the animal under control by capturing it.

Directing the State to ensure the safety of the 20 to 25-year-old tusker, the bench of Justices S. Manikumar and Subramonium Prasad, said that the future of Chinnathambi – captivity or release – can be decided after bringing the animal under complete control.

They also directed officials to refrain from injuring the elephant while capturing it, considering the earlier incident at Thadagam.

Responding to the directions, the Forest Department had said that the animal would be given proper care and trained for two months at either Mudumalai or Anamalai Tiger Reserve.

With two Kumkis, Kaleem and Mariyappan already posted at Kannadiputhur in Udumalaipet, where Chinnathambi is currently roaming, a veterinary team is also kept ready to administer tranquiliser on Chinnathambi in order to capture him.

Once tranquilised, the animal would be moved into the truck with the help of Kumkis and taken to an elephant camp and shut in a Kraal for training.
