Coimbatore : Even as work was underway to widen the Coimbatore-Pollachi highway, a team had met at the Pollachi Sub-Collector's office to discuss ways of saving trees that had to be felled for the widening of the highway project. About 35 trees were transplanted as part of that drive. That initial step has come full circle today, according to B Gayatri Krishnan, Sub-Collector of the Pollachi Revenue Division.

"We have received 10,000 tree saplings from National Highways for the thousand trees in my Division that was cut down for widening the Coimbatore-Pollachi highway. Today, we have planted them in Pollachi South, North, Kinathukadavu and Anaimalai blocks (2500 trees each) in the Root Zone method (CRA method) with closer intervals, a technique which allows for quicker growth of trees.
We have about 20 different types of trees, with 60 percent hard wood trees, 30 percent fruit bearing trees and 10 percent flowering trees which are being planted with the help of PD DRDA and Panchayat officials. Another 10,000 saplings will be given in the next stage. I would like to thank all who have been a part of this project," said the Sub-Collector.
