Coimbatore : Citing non-payment of fees, a Class 12 student was allegedly denied permission to appear for the pre-board practicals at Shree Nehru Maha Vidyalaya School in R S Puram, today.
The mother of the student alleged that her son was made to stand in the school ground and was denied permission to attend the pre-board practical exam owing to delay in payment of school fees.
The student's mother, Ponni lamented that she was unable to remit the fees of Rs.28,000 on time due to a financial crunch. Unable to convince the school management, she sought the help of media.
Her voice recording explaining her situation went viral in many WhatsApp groups following which the media bombarded the school seeking for an explanation. Since the issue had escalated, it is reported that the student was permitted to attend the practical exam.
"I got a call from the school saying they will not allow my son for the pre-board practical exam because of the pending fees. I promised them the fees would be paid shortly and to allow him to attend the practicals. But they simply asked me to take him back. I am not going to run away, since my son's original certificates are with the school. My daughter is in Class 7 in the same school since kindergarten. How can they humiliate my son in front of other students? If he had taken any extreme step because of this humiliation, will the school take up responsibility?" questioned Ponni in the voice recording that went viral.
However, the school has denied the mother's allegation. The school Principal, Shenbaga Ramesh responed to SimpliCity saying that the school never sent the student back.
"In fact, the student had his exam only in the afternoon batch. We never humiliate our students for non-payment of fees. After knowing that the student's mother was struggling to pay the fees, we have by all means tried to help him. Now, the student is attending his practical exam in the afternoon batch and the issue has been resolved," noted the Principal.
According to the new framework of the National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), students should not be humiliated or shamed by a school for any matter, especially for non-payment of fees. And, the increase in fees at any point ought not to be more than the 10 percent of the preceding level.
