Coimbatore : Hundreds of people gathered to witness the bhoomi pooja performed to initiate a massive cleaning drive of Perur Padithurai in the city on Sunday.

This time, the cleaning works have been taken up by the volunteers of Perur Padithurai Pathukappu Iyakkam along with the members of Public Works Department, Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment department and Perur town panchayat.
They have also taken a vow to keep the river clean all through the year. Later, activist Anbarasu flagged off the cleaning drive, which would also involve desilting of the river bed.

Umpteen people throng this place every day to perform rituals to the departed souls leaving behind solid waste that clogs the river. Such regular dumping of waste and the release of sewage water into the river for over a decade now has turned the place into a stagnant pool of litter.

Hence, it is no surprise that the previous attempts to clean Perur Padithurai were not fruitful as people continued to litter over and again.
