According to foresters, the victim Murugan was was one of those farmers who were farming on a 9000 acre plot in the back water area during the dry season. Since the water level had gone up after heavy showers last year, farmers had abandoned the area.
The level of water had slowly started coming down and the level stood at 85 feet at the reservoir area.
In order to see if the area was ready for cultivation, Murugan had gone to check the water level via a forest road.
However, he encountered a wild elephant on the way and was seriously injured by the animal.
He was rushed to a nearby private hospital with fractured knees and is being treated at the intensive care unit.
