The residents of Vasuki and Valluvar Nagar in Coonoor are under immense duress, as open burning of household wastes along with medical wastes in the dump yard adjacent to their area has caused them an array of health problems, mostly respiratory issues.
"Wastes of all kinds including medical wastes from ten wards are being dumped at the 30-feet dump yard close to Valluvar Nagar. Miscreants frequently set fire to the wastes causing grave air pollution in the area. Through the day, the dump yard emantes hazardous smoke which is a potential threat to our health. Especially children and the elderly complain of dizziness and shortness of breath", noted a resident.
The residents also complained of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, coughing, throat irritation, skin conditions, and asthma.
"The children are coughing all the time. The intensity of the smell would cause us to become dizzy", they lamented.
The irked residents have urged the Municipality to remove the dumped wastes on a timely basis and initiate stern action on those who dump medical wastes.
