The Nilgiris : The novel idea of using teak wood leaves as an alternative to plastic by the meat sellers in Gudalur has garnered the attention of many traders across the State.

“Following the plastic ban, we had to urge the customers to bring vessels to buy meat and fish. However, the idea was not welcomed by the people, as it was not practically difficult for people to carry vessels at all time. During that phase, the meat sales even dipped. It was then we ideated to use banana leaves for packing meat. Due to the state-wide demand for banana leaves, there was a glitch in regular supply of banana leaves and even the prices of the leaves sky-rocketed. While, we were constantly brainstorming for alternatives, the bountiful availability of teakwood leaves in our region struck our minds”, noted Razzaq a meat seller from Gudalur in the Nilgiris District.

He also added that teak leaves are the latest addition to our eco-friendly alternatives to plastic in Gudalur. “As the teak leaves are broad and sturdy, cut meat can easily be packed without hassles. The customer also have expressed satisfaction”, he noted.
