Coimbatore: Coimbatore-based Citizens Voice Club, an Organisation in the services of Consumers and Environment Awareness has petitioned to the Ministry of State Transport to regularise tariffs proposed by call taxi aggregators like Ola, Uber and share autos.
C.M. Jayaraman, President of the Citizens Voice club through a plea has alleged that the public are largely affected by the unruly pricing methodologies practiced by the call taxi aggregators. Though the ascend of call taxis have immensely contributed in mobility of people, the burden of unregulated tariffs is forced on the public. The guidelines for urban mobility proposed by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highway (MoRTH), Government of India has not been abided by the call taxi aggregators.
He also noted that call taxi aggregators do not follow an uniform, fair and transparent regulatory framework. As the operators now use mobile fare application rather than electronic fare meter, the distance travelled and the fare is determined by the algorithms.
“When a customer pre-books a taxi, based on the distance, the mobile application ascertains a fare and seeks for approval from the customer to confirm booking. Once the booking is confirmed, a taxi is assigned to the concerned location. However, citing several reasons, the taxi drivers demand higher amount from the customer at the end of the ride. While the drivers point fingers at the automatic application, the customers are left with no option apart from settling the amount”, he noted in his plea.
Hence, on behalf of the Citizens Voice Club he has urged the State Transport Ministry to audit the software applications and implement uniform fair tariff practices among the call taxi aggregators. He also stressed that it is mandatory for cab drivers to wear uniforms and I-cards (badges), while on duty.
