Cargo Connection Conclave discusses exporters, importers’ issues

Coimbatore: Over 300 exporters, importers, logistics providers and representatives from the ports attended the Cargo Connection Conclave, jointly organised by Federation of Indian Export Organisation (FIEO) and India Seatrade at Coimbatore on Saturday. It focused on the need to increase investments to develop logistic ecosystem in the industrial sector. Issues faced by exporters and importers at the global front were also discussed at the meeting.

Coimbatore: Over 300 exporters, importers, logistics providers and representatives from the ports attended the Cargo Connection Conclave, jointly organised by Federation of Indian Export Organisation (FIEO) and India Seatrade at Coimbatore on Saturday. It focused on the need to increase investments to develop logistic ecosystem in the industrial sector. Issues faced by exporters and importers at the global front were also discussed at the meeting. 

Speaking at the event, FIEO’s former president Dr M.Rafeeque Ahmed welcomed the government’s initiative to increase investments in the creation critical infra-structure through ‘Make in India’ programmes. “This will help the country to foray into the next generation of global value chain related manufacturing. India could achieve the set export target only if operational and logistical movement of Export-Import (EXIM) cargo is ensured,” he said.

About higher logistic costs in Tirupur, Coimbatore, Erode and Madurai districts, he suggested change in policies related to logistics industry to make it more efficient and cost-effective. Later, he also highlighted issues affecting the growth of coastal shipping, especially lack of transhipment facilities.

Delivering the key note address, Chief Commissioner of Customs, Ranjan Kumar Routray, said that the department has undertaken several trade facilitation measures to minimize the time needed for clearance of export and import cargo. 

South India Maritime sector, efficiency of outbound logistics, global trend in the industry and issues of local market shippers and service providers were also discussed.
