Coimbatore: Based on the directions of the Election Commission, a week-long programme to spread awareness about the functioning of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trails (VVPATs) among people and political parties has been flagged off at the Collectorate here on Saturday.
Coimbatore: Based on the directions of the Election Commission, a week-long programme to spread awareness about the functioning of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trails (VVPATs) among people and political parties has been flagged off at the Collectorate here on Saturday.
According to an official, "Although people are familiar with the EVM, the newly-introduced VVPAT, which promises more transparency in the voting system, requires to be established. The VVPATs are designed to allow people to ensure that their vote as been cast to the contester they had chosen."
Usually, such campaigns were organised by members of the Election Commission at the District level. It would then reach the people at the constituency levels. However, this time, it has been organised under the leadership of the Collector.
"The VVPATs will be used to conduct election at all 10 constituencies in the district. Under the supervision of the collector, a six-member team has been formed in each constituency to conduct the campaign. Today, the south constituency team has started their campaign to demonstrate the functioning of VVPATs on a mobile van", said a release from the Collectorate.
The campaign aims to alleviate misconceptions about VVPATs among people, the release added.
Deputy Corporation Commissioner and District Revenue Officer also took part in the event.
