Coimbatore: "Sexual crimes against women and children is on the rise in Coimbatore District and to bring them down, the police department should work with women’s organisations and conduct monthly meetings", stated U.Vasuki , Vice President, All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) a press conference here on Friday.
The CPI (M) central committee member mentioned that AIDWA will propose to the police department to hold monthly joint meetings with the Women's organisations to address the issue of increasing sexual harassment cases against women and children in the district.
Vasuki also talked about the importance of an internal committee at work places to address issues of sexual harassment to women. She further pointed out that though the committee is mandatory, a majority of industries ignore to constitute such a committee and the Government should take stringent action against such companies.
She cited the recent incident in which a 4-year-old girl child was sexually assaulted in the school bus in the City. "Police officials conducted an enquiry with the child in their uniforms at the police station. The officials did not seem to have known the provisions under POCSO. The accused were not booked under sections which prescribe severe punishment, in spite of AIDWA bringing up the issue", she said.
Vasuki was highly critical about the Prime Minister for his statements made in the Parliament claiming that lakhs of jobs were created during the BJP rule in the past four and a half years. “The PM has asked the people to have trust in the BJP government. How can we trust a government which has failed in all the fronts, be it social or economic?", the women's leader slammed.
"The country is witnessing the worst unemployment rate in the last 45 years. However, in the BJP's election manifesto, they talked about providing 10 crore jobs. But now the PM claims that they have created lakhs of jobs which is a blatant lie. Unemployment is at the highest rate in this government which has been proved by reports of NSSO and a study conducted by Azim Premji's University. Any country which is facing such a huge unemployment problem will witness massive social unrest. For, the last two years, no report on unemployment levels in the country has been published which itself is a clear indication that the government is hiding the truth," she alleged.
The CPI( M) leader condemned the economic policies of the BJP government ."Demonetisation and GST have destroyed MSMEs across the country," she remarked.
Speaking about the problems faced by the farmers, the AIDWA leader said, "Farmers across the country are going through a crisis period. In this scenario, the government has turned a blind eye and makes illogical conclusions that agricultural sector is making good profits. The government is completely blindfolded about the problems related to farmers, dalits, women and children which is highly condemnable".
