Tirupur : A 15-year old elephant calf died near Udumalai after it fell into a canal. Official sources say that the calf had fallen into the Condor Canal that carries water from the Parambikkulam Dam to the Thirumurthy Dam.
Tirupur : A 15-year old elephant calf died near Udumalai after it fell into a canal. Official sources say that the calf had fallen into the Condor Canal that carries water from the Parambikkulam Dam to the Thirumurthy Dam.

The canal runs through the dense forest areas of Udumlai, Valparai and Manampalli and a sought-after spot for animals to drink water from.
The elephant had attempted to drink water from the canal but fell into it and was carried away by the swirling waters of the canal up to the Thirumurthy Dam.

The body of the elephant has been retrieved from r the dam. After a post-mortem, the Forest Department plans to bury the elephant near the dam.

With forest officials busy having to already deal with Chinna Thambi's jaunts near human habitation and ensuring its safety, the death of an elephant calf being caused to drowning in a canal has further shocked officials.
