Coimbatore: Volunteers and forest personnel of the Coimbatore forest division hit the wetlands of Coimbatore in search of avian visitors as the annual synchronised waterfowl census kick started today.
Coimbatore: Volunteers and forest personnel of the Coimbatore forest division hit the wetlands of Coimbatore in search of avian visitors as the annual synchronised waterfowl census kick started today.
The census programme is jointly organised by the Coimbatore Forest Department and Worldwide Fund for Nature.
More than 60 volunteers including researchers, students and ngo members along with the field staff of forest department went to the allotted lakes to ascertain the distribution of water birds.
The total population was also counted by the teams in all the water bodies.
The opening has yielded some fruitful results in some lakes with close to 80 birds being spotted at the Vellalore tank. The Walayar reservoir area has also hosted almost 50 birds.
Notably, 166 species were spotted in the census last year with Vellalore tank fetching the most number of species with 89 species. More than a thousand birds belonging to different species were recorded from Ukkadam big tank last year.
The census programme ends tomorrow.
