The Nilgiris: Due to bushes and grass drying up in forest areas in Gudalur, Mudumalai and Seegur in the Nilgiris District, the danger of forest fires breaking out this drought season is fast becoming a possibility. Wild animals, particularly elephants have started moving to human habitation in search of water.

The Forest Department is taking precautionary measures to set up fire lines with guards on duty to prevent fire. The Department is also filling up forest ponds so that wild animals don’t stray out of the forests for water.

Forest officials say that this activity will continue until the end of summer, since there is the possibility of clashes between man and animals in the fight for survival.
