Tirupur : Hundreds of farmers near Udumalpet staged a protest asking for Chinnathambi to be driven back into the forests.

Tusker Chinnathambi who had been roaming at Krishnapuram near Udumalpet for the past five days, entered Sengalipudur in the wee hours of this morning and raided sugarcane and paddy crops cultivated there. Following this, more than hundred farmers staged a road roko at Krishnapuram urging for Chinnathambi to be driven away. Due to this, vehicle movement came to a standstill on the Coimbatore-Dindigul national highway.

During the protest, farmers lamented that Chinnathambi had damaged sugarcane, coconut and paddy crops, in large numbers. "The Forest Department has also backed away from chasing Chinnathambi away, citing the court order. If no action is initiated, the elephant will continue to damage our crops," they added.

Though Chinnathambi has not caused any damage in the past five days, it seems to have avoided venturing near the Amaravathi sugar cane mill since the mill management had carried out cleaning work with a JCB, since yesterday. But the elephant has reportedly turned to the agricultural fields and raided them.
