Coimbatore: The price of bananas in Mettupalayam has increased due to various factors including floods in the Bhavani river and the Sabarimala issue.
Banana plantation is carried out widely in and around Mettupalayam, due to the fact that it is the major livelihood of people residing in this area. Nendran, Robusta, Sevvazhai are the major varieties of bananas grown here. Recently, banana plantation across 9,000 acres were destroyed owing to floods in the Bhavani river. Due to this, banana farming suffered heavily up to almost 60 percent in this area. Bananas were scarce at auction centres resulting in its price rise.
The price of 'Sevvazhai' had doubled due to which many refrained from buying this particular variety of banana. The heavy floods in Kerala and the Sabarimala issue further caused buyers from Kerala to stop buying from across the border. This also resulted in the downfall of sale of the 'nendran' in Kerala.
