A leopard has reportedly entered a house at Paattavayal Kaivatta near Gudalur in Nilgiris. Rayan, a resident of Paattavayal Kaivatta is reported to have seen a leopard lying under the bed in his house and immediately ran out of the house locking the door behind him.
As the post of Veterinarian in Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) is still vacant and the only other Veterinarian for this entire zone, Dr.Manoharan is deputed to Udumalaipet to tranquilize wild elephant Chinnathambi, sadly, the leopard had to stay indoors.
Hence, the public have expressed disappointment over the forest department for not having an alternative veterinary doctor in Gudalur where such animal encounters are common.
As Veterinarians are a must for handling and capturing wild animals that have ventured into residential spaces, lack of adequate veterinarians in MTR has created panic among the residents of Gudalur who had to wait unduly for a Veterinarian to address the issue.
"Especially to tranqulise and translocate problematic animals, the role of a Veterinarian is paramount", noted a forest field staff in MTR.
