In a reply to a PIL filed by an activist in the court yesterday, the State authorities of the Forest Department said that they were only attempting to drive the animal back inside the forest with the help of Kumkis.
“The elephant has moved far away from the spot from he was released and is almost 20 kms outside the forest. It is becoming difficult to drive him inside thick forest. We are trying the best options available,” the official said.
The court had also showed concern over the use of earth movers in the capturing of the tusker and have adjourned the case to hear from experts in the field.
The PIL was filed after Forest Minister Dindigul C. Sreenivasan said on Saturday that the animal would be caught and put in a Kraal. However the government had denied such claims.
Meanwhile, Chinnathambi continues to roam around human habitations in Udumalpet.
