Coimbatore: The police are on the lookout for a gang of tricksters who in a cinematic fashion, walked away with 24 sovereign of gold after distracting the attention of the possessors.

A Jewellery exhibition is on in a five-star hotel in the Avinashi Road in the city. A couple of days back, it is alleged that a group of six including four ladies went around every stall the day and engaged themselves in a chat with the organisers, thus distracting their attention.

According to police reports, a man and two ladies of the gang entered a jewellery stall and made enquiries with the salesman about the prices. When the latter was giving them the price details, a lady stole a 24 sovereign jewel without the notice of the salesman and stealthily handed it over to another lady. Thereafter, they left the place soon, saying they would make the purchase later.

The salesman, while taking stock of the jewels found that one jewel had gone missing. He conveyed this to the Manager, who in turn informed the police.

The Racecourse Crime branch police, headed by Inspector Mohanraj visited the stall and initiated investigation. While watching the CCTV recordings, they found how the gang eloped with the jewel after distracting the attention of the salesman.

Obviously, how the group of six including four ladies had planned the mode of theft after learning about the exhibition and meticulously executed their scheme.

The value of the stolen jewel is estimated as Rs.6 lakhs. On the complaint by the Jewellery’s Manager Gaurav Sony, the Race course police have registered a case against the gang and are investigating the matter.
