"An estimated 9.5 million people worldwide were expected to die from cancer in 2018 – about 26,000 cancer deaths a day - and that number is predicted to grow very soon", says Dr.P.Guhan, Director Sri Ramakrishna Institute of Oncology and Research (SRIOR) Coimbatore.
This year, the Union for International Cancer Control is launching a new three-year campaign with the theme: “I Am and I Will” which implies a personal commitment to one and all to help reduce the global burden of cancer.
In this regard, an awareness van was flagged off by Balaji Saravanan, Deputy Commissioner of Police Law and Order, Coimbatore District on the occasion of World Cancer Day February 4 held at Sri Ramakrishna Hospital Auditorium, here.
"Hence, I and We at the Cancer Center have vowed to reach out to the citizens around the District of Coimbatore with all our latest digital awareness platforms, so that each one of us gets involved and help others in creating a ripple of awareness", added Dr.P.Guhan.
A press release from the hospital says "The Director has come out wih a very novel idea of creating a Digital Awareness Van with an Android LED screen installed at its rear windscreen and its connected to a water proof speaker system installed in the rear of the van. The van has a WiFi hotspot which transmits the internet to the LED screen so that the instructor demonstrates to the public the awareness message from YouTube channel, e-books, websites, android applications, animated videos which were created by the institute in the last ten years".
"The van has a built in microphone system which allows the instructor to teach the public to use the applications in Google Play Store created by SRIOR for various cancer awareness like Tobacco cessation app and breast cancer awareness app", the release noted.
Over the 15 years, through project “DEEPAM” the team has screened nearly 3 lakh plus people totally free of cost and has counseled nearly a million. The contact number for the awareness van is 93442 75008, says the communique from the hospital.
Dr.P.Guhan, has also announced a month long free screening program for prostrate cancer to all men above the age of 40.
The launch was presided by R.Vijayakumhar, Managing Trustee SNR Sons Charitable Trust, D. Lakshminarayanaswamy, Joint Managing Trustee SNR Sons Charitable Trust, Dr.P.Guhan, Director SRIOR, Dr.K.Karthikesh, Chief Surgical Oncologist SRIOR and other doctors of the institute.
