Ooty's Rose Garden preps up for flower show with 4000 varieties of roses

The Nilgiris : The department of horticulture has prepped up work for the upcoming flower show at the world-renowned Rose garden in Ooty which is spread in a sprawling 4 hectares of land.

"Including varieties like Miniature Roses, Ramblers, Hybrid Tea Roses, Yakimour, Polyanthas, Papagena and Floribunda, 4000 varieties of rose collections will enthrall the visitors, this year. Close to 30,000 rose plants are added to the nursery for the upcoming season", said an official from the horticulture department. 



"The varieties assembled here are procured from different parts of the world. Especially, the black and green roses are a major attraction", he added. 

He noted that the garden has been maintained by the Tamil Nadu Horticulture department. 

Lakhs of tourists from various parts of the nation including oversees tourists visit the Government Rose Garden (formerly known as the Jayalalithaa Rose Garden, Centenary Rose Park or Nootrandu Roja Poonga) in Ooty. 



About the Rose Garden 

The rose garden was set as part of the centenary celebrations of the botanical garden in May, 1995.

In 2006, the World Federation of Rose Society awarded Ooty's Rose Garden with 'Garden of Excellence Award' for being the best rose garden in south Asia. This garden is one of the 35 gardens worldwide to have received this award.

The garden has rose tunnels, pergolas and bowers with rose creepers. The slopes of the garden also features the Nila Maadam, an observation platform. From the Nila Maadam, tourists can observe the entire rose garden. The garden also features a statue of an angel amidst the roses. (Wiki)
