Coimbatore: Forest Minister of Tamil Nadu Dindigul C. Sreenivasan, said here on Friday that elephant Chinnathambi that is roaming outside forest areas post translocation would be captured and put inside Kraal soon.
Talking at the launch of Gaja Yatra, an event held as a part of the Ecological Festival of Western Ghats at Krishna College of Arts and Science here, the Minister said that the animal termed as a problem elephant was coming outside forest even after being moved to a larger forest tract.
“We tried the same strategy in Hosur when an elephant created problem there and that elephant is within forests now. But Chinnathambi is an entirely different case where the animal is preferring human dominated landscape,” he claimed.
Opining that the situation needs to be dealt with immediately he added that the only option was to put him in a Kraal and train him as a Kumki.
Talking about the event, the Minister said that such events are important to create awareness about wildlife and environment.
“The Government believes that 33 per cent of the land should be forest. We would support conservation of nature in all forms,” he said.
Later on the day, the Minister along with Minister for Rural Development S.P. Velumani inaugurated the Gaja Yatra.
A play was also staged by the students of the PSG College of Arts and Science about elephants.
