The Nilgiris: People living in the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) have alleged that they were cheated to a tune of Rs. 50,000 by some advocates in the pretext of helping them get relocation compensation of Rs.10 lakh.
The Nilgiris: People living in the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) have alleged that they were cheated to a tune of Rs. 50,000 by some advocates in the pretext of helping them get relocation compensation of Rs.10 lakh.
Under the terms of the relocation, 400 families living in villages and settlements in MTR were ordered to relocate and were approved a compensation of Rs. 10 lakh.
To protect the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve which is located in the Nilgiris District over a sprawling 321 sq.km, all human population from the reserves were ordered to relocate. MTR is an important part of the Nilgiris Biosphere Reserve. The reserve is home to a variety of species such as Tiger, Elephant, Indian Gaur, Panther, Sambar, Spotted Deer, Barking Deer, and others.
The villagers and tribals from Pennai, Nellikottai, Kolli in Pandalur taluk petitioned on Friday to the Nilgiris Superintendent, Shanmugapriya that they were approached by some advocates who collected Rs. 50,000 and promised to get them Rs. 10 lakh compensation from the government towards relocation.
"However, they failed to do so and eloped with the money", the villagers alleged.
They jointly requested the SP to initiate action against the advocates who cheated them and help them recover their money.
