Coimbatore: The rise in use of narcotic drugs has alarmed the police department and the officials of Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB). Recently, the free movement of drugs and contraband medicines among youngsters, especially college students has prompted the police and NCB to conduct joint raids to annihilate drug usage in the city.

In the past week, the police have arrested 4 people including two medical shop owners for selling sleeping drugs to youngsters.
The scenario is so threatening that the drug sale could touch an all time high in the city.
Proving the point, the police along with NCB seized 40 kgs of ganja packets from two people near railway station on Friday evening.
The duo were identified as Vandala Raju (30) and Konda Babu (41) from Visakhapatnam. The duo were caught red-handed while they were trying to sell ganja. Investigations are on to find out how they target the youth and from where they source these drugs.
City police have received a tip off that drug peddlers in the city are targeting youth, particularly college students and IT professionals. Hence, special teams have been formed under the supervision of Coimbatore City Police Commissioner, Sumit Sharan who has ordered to tighten vigil at all educational institutions and prominent locations to protect students from drug peddlers.
