Coimbatore: Two medical shop owners were arrested on Thursday for selling 'Nitrazepam' tablets to youngsters, who used them as drugs.
N. Madan (42) of Kuniyamuthur and Subramanian (52) of Venkatesa Nagar at Saravanampatti were the shop owners who were arrested by the city police.
Around 70 such tablets were seized from Madan's medical shop at Edayarpalayam and 10,000 Nitrazepam tablets were seized from Subramanian’s shop at Saravanampatti.
Recently, the city police under the orders of City Police Commissioner, Sumit Sharan and Deputy Commissioner of Police, Law and Order, Balaji Saravanan have been conducting raids at several spots to curb sale of illegal drugs in the city.
Based on a tip off, that medical shops in the city are selling Nitrazepam drugs which are used in patient's to treat sleep disorders are sold to youngsters to get high, the police secretively conducted patrols to trace the shops.
In one such patrol, the above-mentioned shop owners were found to have been supplying these drugs illegally without prescription to youngsters. The drugs have been sold 5x times more to the youngters.
A case has been filed against Madan and Subramaniam.
