Coimbatore : The elderly seeking medical help at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) are increasingly finding it difficult to walk through the different sections of the hospital and the lack of battery cars is a glaring oversight on the part of the hospital.

CMCH is located on the Coimbatore-Trichy Road spread across 18.5 acres. People from Nilgiris, Tirupur, Erode, Salem and Kerala throng the Government Hospital here in large numbers. It is estimated that on a daily basis, 5,000 to 7,000 outpatients seek medical help here, while 17,000 to 20,000 in-patients are being treated here.

But, the elderly who visit as outpatients find it laborious to walk from one corner of the hospital to the other, owing to the vast spread area. About two years ago, two battery cars were bought at the cost of Rs.16 lakhs for the benefit of the elderly which was welcomed by the the public. Initially, the battery cars were maintained properly with the aid of private companies. With wear and tear over the two years, the cars were soon dumped at one corner of the hospital without being serviced or used.
