Coimbatore: Coimbatore contractors welfare association have requested the government to consider their demands regarding the benefits offered to contractual workers. The association has demanded that the government departments that provide contracts should take care of the ESI, EPF benefits of contract workers.
Coimbatore: Coimbatore contractors welfare association have requested the government to consider their demands regarding the benefits offered to contractual workers. The association has demanded that the government departments that provide contracts should take care of the ESI, EPF benefits of contract workers.
A case was filed by the association in the Chennai high court emphasising a few demands that include ensuring minimum 10% profit for contractors among others. On the state government's direction, a negotiation led by Prabhakaran, Principal Secretary to Tamil Nadu government was held recently.
In a press meet regarding the same which was held at Coimbatore on Wednesday, K.C.Chandra prakash, General Secretary said that the association has urged the above mentioned demands to the government.
Chandraprakash further stated, "The contract workers are daily labourers. Their work depends upon the availability of contracts. Hence, when there are no contracts, the labourers are jobless and the contractors are unable to provide additional benefits to the workers. Hence, the concerned department should take responsible of the workers benefits".
Among the other demand, the contractors also proposed to use diesel instead of furnace oil for producing tar mixture, as public frequently raise complaint on the pollution caused by the furnace oil.
The association Secretary concluded that the government has agreed to consider their demands. "A committee will be formed on behalf of various government departments. And, based on the committee's recommendation, the demands will be fulfilled", he noted.
Udaykumar, President, Coimbatore vorporation contractors welfare association, Michael Selvaraj and Amman Stephen, Committee Coordinators were also present during the meet.
