The gift of a lifetime by a 21-year old brain dead youngster


Yuvaraj, a 21-year-old engineering graduate from Dharapuram was undergoing critical treatment at Sri Ramakrishna Hospital was unfortunately declared brain dead today after suffering a massive posterior circulation stroke.

The family members of Yuvaraj came forward with a noble gesture of donating Yuvaraj's organ.

Dr. Chezian, Nephrologist from Ramakrishna Hospital along with Dr.Ashokan and Dr.Arunadevi coordinated the harvesting and transplantation process. The doctors confirmed that Yuvaraj's brain death was confirmed twice in an interval of six hours by an expert panel of doctors.

The heart, liver, two kidneys and two corneas were transplanted from his body. His heart was harvested to a patient at GKNM Hospital. His kidneys were transplanted to a patient in KG Hospital and one to a patient at Ramkrishna Hospital. His corneas were donated to Sankara Eye Hospital and liver to PSG Hospitals.

It is to be noted that Sri Ramakrishna Hospital holds the Guinness record for the most people to sign up for organ donation in a span of eight hours.
