Tirupur : Farmers have begun harvesting paddy that was cultivated in 10,000 acres of land, in and around Kangeyam which was irrigated through water flowing from the Bhavanisagar Dam.

About 18,000 acres of land at Thittuparai, Murudhurai, Nathakadaiyur and Muththur benefit through the Keel Bhavani irrigation made possible by the Bhavanisagar Dam. Meanwhile, nearly after three years, the Bhavanisagar Dam was opened for irrigation in August last year which continued till the year-end.

Following this, paddy cultivation was carried across 10,000 acres in Nathakadaiyur and Muththur regions. Farmers are overjoyed with the abundant paddy growth. They claim to have spent more than Rs.30,000 per acre due to increase in wages and cost of fertilizers.

The State Government has announced Rs.18 per kg for paddy procured through Government procurement centres which is low when compared to the production costs. "The Government should consider increasing the procurement cost," urged the farmers. The farmers have reportedly had to bring labour from Karur, Salem and Dharmapuri for the harvesting.
