JACTO-GEO members were on strike since January 22 demanding to fulfill their 9-point demands. As a majority of Government school teachers took part in the protest, the education of Government school students was widely affected. In spite of the State Government's request to withdraw the protest, the protesting teachers refused to do so and continued their agitation for the eighth consecutive day.
Meanwhile, the School Education Department released a statement today stating, "The posting of teachers who do no return to work before 9 am today will be announced as vacant. The vacant posts will be filled with temporary teachers." Though 95 percent teachers returned to work, protests continued in Chennai and Coimbatore into the wee hours of Tuesday.
The School Education Department has announced that the seats of the 447 teachers who failed to return to work will be replaced with temporary teachers.
