Coimbatore: Pastors of about 25 churches in Mettupalayam have petitioned the District Collector T N Hariharan to allot them with one acre of land for burial purposes since existing cemeteries seem to have reached their optimum use.
The pastors noted that it was the monthly subscriptions and donations of about 5000 members in their churches that have helped in maintaining the graves.
"However, in the recent days there has been a shortage of space to bury people since all the cemeteries attached to churches have been used to the full. Since the CSI Church has prohibited reusing the same grave to bury another person, the churches are unable to allot space for burial purposes. And, we do not have enough resources to extend them or open new ones," noted the pastors in their petition.
"As our religious rules forbid the dead from being cremated, we request the District adminstration to look into our plea and allot us with one acre of land just for cemetery purposes," urged the petition.
