Tirupur: Over 50 members of the Tamil Nadu Untouchability Eradication Front were arrested by the police when they attempted to prevent work for the laying of the entrance to the temple at Alagumalai village, here.
More than 200 Dalits reside at the Alagumalai village in Tirupur. A pathway near the Eswaran temple here was used by the Dalits to fetch water and to take their children to schools. Meanwhile, during November of last year, a fence was erected blocking the pathway. A part of the fence was removed following stiff opposition from the public and political parties. Meanwhile, attempts were made to lay an entrance to the temple by blocking the pathway, this morning.
Condemning this, more than 50 members of the Tamil Nadu Untouchability Eradication Front, including women staged a protest. A clash broke out between them and the police when they attempted to close the pit which had been dug for laying the entrance. Following this, all those protesting were arrested by police and laying of the entrance resumed with police protection.
