Demanding scrapping of the contributory pension scheme, promoting second grade teachers to kindergarten and asking pay on parity with central government employees, the flock of JACTO GEO members continue to agitate in spite of the Government's order to return back to duty for the welfare of the students.
With the indefinite strike on, the CEO and DEO offices in the city were thronged by thousands of people in long queues waiting to submit their application forms, following the State Government’s order to appoint new teachers on a temporary basis. However, the appointment process for new temporary staff is expected to be an arduous, time-consuming process.
Meanwhile, schools in the city remained closed and wore a deserted look. The Government Girls Middle School in Manyathottam, Coimbatore remained closed, and the few students who came to school were asked to sit inside the office room. "We thought the school will function today but the situation is opposite,” lamented the students. Over 20 students were marked present today with only one office staff to guide them.
The school has a total of 98 students from Classes 1 to 8, for which only five staff have been appointed to teach according to the record officer present at the school. When the CEO office was contacted regarding the stalemate prevailing, it was stated that as many as 3152 teachers from the Primary and Middle Schools have boycotted work to participate in the strike today.
In the JACTO-GEO protest being held in Tirupur, around 1500 members who had staged a road roko in front of the District Collectorate were arrested by the police. A minor clash broke out between the police and the members during the protest.
