Coimbatore : Target Zero Environment and Wild Conservation Trust which was started with like-minded people from the social media circle clear out plastic waste and liquor bottles from canals in Aliyar to Valparai Road, every Sunday. Continuing the good work for the 33rd week, the team of young volunteers cleaned two rain water canals and the contour canal area, yesterday.

Speaking with SimpliCity, the Coordinator of Target Zero Environment, Balakumaran said, "Our motto is to make the environment and forest zone totally plastic-free. Every Sunday, we clean Aliyar to Valparai Road. Thus far, we have crossed 33 weeks, retrieving 4.5 tons of plastics and liquor bottles from the Valparai Forest zone. In the first phase, we cleaned the First Hair Pin to the 30th Hairpin Bend. As part of the second phase, we started from the Aliyar Check Post and have now reached the Valparai Road Contour Canal."

"It is important to ensure canals are kept clean for gathering rain water that can be stored in the dam. But, canals are now fully dumped with waste. We have cleaned out everything from the canals now," stated Balakumaran. The team has thus far cleaned out 14 rain water canals from the Aliyar check post to the Contour Canal.
