Nilgiris : Heavy frost that prevailed in Nilgiris for the past three months damaged tea plantations spread across 15,000 acres which has resulted in a loss of Rs.135 crores.
The heavy frost is said to have led to the damage of tea leaves. The minimum temperature recorded at Coonoor, Kunda and Kotagiri was 3 degrees celsius which has also widely affected the inflow of tea leaves into tea factories. Commenting on this, the Deputy Director of Coonoor Agricultural Research Centre said, "Heavy frost has damaged up to 600 kgs of tea leaves inflow for every one acre. Rs.15 will be gained for every one kg but Rs.9000 loss was incurred for every acre in the past three months. Scorching of tea leaves has damaged up to 15,000 acres of tea estate incurring up to a loss of Rs.135 crore."
