Coimbatore : On the basis of specific intelligence received that two airline staff at the Coimbatore International are facilitating gold smuggling, the officers of DRI, Coimbatore tightened the vigil and intercepted both the passenger and the airline staff and recovered 16 crude gold bars.
Coimbatore : On the basis of specific intelligence received that two airline staff at the Coimbatore International are facilitating gold smuggling, the officers of DRI, Coimbatore tightened the vigil and intercepted both the passenger and the airline staff and recovered 16 crude gold bars.
A total of 16 numbers of crude gold bars were recovered which weighed 1.6 kilograms valued at close to Rs.55 lakhs.
According to a release from airport authorities, "Further, with the help of the information elicited from the apprehended airline staff, a plan was quickly drawn to capture all the persons involved in this organized smuggling.
A team officers were swiftly dispatched and the actual receiver / organiser and the investor who was waitng in a car about 3 Kms away from the airport were also apprehended while trying to escape.
The entire group of persons admitted their involvement in the smuggling racket for the lucrative money offered by Mizra, the main accused and financier, who is still at large.
All the other persons involved in the racket -- the two airline staff Manoj and Sathesh, the passenger Syed Abuthahir, organizer T. Raja of Trichy and the driver were arrested and enlarged on bail.
Further investigation in the case is in progress".
