Chennai : In a sweeping move, the Tamil Nadu School Education Department has sent show cause notices to all the JACTO-GEO striking teachers under Section 17 B, and also issued an order to respective District Collectors in all districts to recruit temporary teachers to handle classes in all the State-run schools.
Over 80 percent of Government schools did not function in the last three days owing to an indefinite strike by teachers demanding fulfillment of their seven-point charter of demands. Even though the Madras High Court had banned the strike and directed the striking teachers to return to work before January 25, the teachers belonging to the JACTO-GEO refused to budge and decided to carry on with their strike, as decided in their latest meeting which was held in Chennai.
The temporary teachers who are expected to be appointed will be on a consolidated pay of Rs.7000, with District Collectors being asked to start the recruitment drive immediately.
The JACTO GEO has added new demands namely that the Government should give up the policy decision to close down 3500 nutritious meal centers and abandon the move for merger of Primary Schools with High and Higher Secondary Schools in the State.
