"Due to this new rule, TV subscription charges might get dearer and consumers will be forced to shell out extra Rs.500 to watch all the channels from the month of January", they said.
While demanding that the Government should invite the cable TV operators union members for talks before implementing the such rules, the union has demanded that the GST should be scaled down to 5% slab from the current 18% slab for the welfare of the common people.
The new rules stipulate that customers have to pay for every channel they choose to watch individually, instead of paying for packages, and this would mean that if one prefers to watch all channels the subscription cost might touch Rs.700 every month, which is an exorbitant tariff for the public, opined the union.
Condemning this move, the cable TV operators switched off their telecast from 6 am today, due to which 7.5 lakh subscribers have been affected in Coimbatore district alone.
