Though January 16 was observed as 'Maatu Pongal', a day marked to honour cattle, at MTR the cattle pongal transformed into ‘Yaanai Pongal’.

The annual Pongal festival at MTR is a hit among the people, as all camp elephants would be well-decorated and garlanded. The celebrations went on till 8 pm during which specially prepared sweet pongal, fruits and sugarcane was fed to the elephants.

Mahouts of all the 26 elephants lodged at the camp fed their respective elephants. Irrespective of the prevailing cold weather conditions, many tourists and locals took part in the celebration.
