Coimbatore : With 'Pongal' being celebrated all over Tamil Nadu, the festive mood resonates in marketplaces where earthen pots, sugarcane and 'manjal roots' are sold.

Uzhavar Sandhai, the Vegetable Market and R S Puram's Flower Market have been teeming with people buying essentials like aavarampoo and manjal root saplings to celebrate Pongal.

Sugarcane, another must-have for Pongal is being sold at Rs.230 to Rs.400 for about 10-15 of them. “The arrival of sugarcane from the Tiruchy area has increased this Pongal season since the region received good rainfall during the crop season, whereas arrivals from Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri have been less. The sales are overall good and we do expect a good sale this season,” say sugar cane sellers.

With the 'Pongal' dish being cooked in the earthen pot becoming a rage in recent times, the demand for such pots has increased too. Pots (from half kg to 6 kg) are sold by the potters of Kovundampalayam and sold in a price range of Rs.80 to Rs.150, in accordance to the size of the pots. "But the number of shops selling earthen pots on roadsides have increased which would cut into our profits,” say the potters selling the earthenware in Kovundampalayam.

Markets in Saibaba Colony, Gandhipuram and other marketplaces are also crowded and heavily congested with traffic, this Pongal season.
