Coimbatore : United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in collaboration with Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), a statutory body under Ministry of Power, Government of India, is executing a Global Environment Facility (GEF) funded national project “Promoting energy efficiency and renewable energy in selected MSME clusters in India.

Out of the 535 foundry units in Coimbatore, 20 units have been selected for the pilot study and so far the units have saved 1.75 lakh KW power, after implementation of energy efficient measures. Co2 emissions have come down by 1079 metric tonnes due to this project, reports say.

In order to highlight the energy efficient initiatives taken by the units, UNIDO in collaboration with BEE and COINDIA organised a launch event today for the demo project on “State of the art energy efficient air compressor system” installed in Veesaa Foundry through financial support from the GEF-UNIDO-BEE project.

The launch event was attended by several senior officials from the Ministry of Power and Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.

Speaking on this , S.Kuppusamy, President COINDIA stated "Technology upgradation for energy efficiency has brought in a considerable effect on the environment. To support the MSMEs clusters can approach for funding through NSIC. Currently, the pilot project has been implemented in few units. However, we are working towards bringing in more foundries into the fold".

 About the project

The aim of the project is to develop and promote a market environment for introducing energy efficiencies and enhanced use of renewable energy technologies in process applications in 12 selected energy-intensive MSME clusters in India. The project focussed on improving the productivity and competitiveness of the units, as well as to reduce overall carbon emissions and enhance local environment.

The project is working on majorly four components as mentioned below: -

Component 1: Increased capacity of suppliers of EE/RE product suppliers/ service providers/ finance providers.

Component 2: Increasing the level of end-use demand and implementation of EE and RE technologies and practices by MSMEs.

Component 3: Scaling up of the project to a national level.

Component 4: Strengthening policy, institutional and decision-making frameworks.

The project has till now Implemented 24 pilot projects and more than 400 small scale energy efficient projects in the clusters which has resulted in an annual reduction of 8162 ton energy consumption and 43 thousand metric tonnes of CO2 emissions. The project has also conducted around 84 awareness cum training workshops on EE/RE improvements in the clusters.

The project has established 12 Energy Management Centre equipped with energy audit instruments to provide hand holding support to the enterprises in improving energy efficiency measures in the clusters.

A calendar for 2019 on 'Best Operating Practices', designed and developed for the Coimbatore cluster was released by the dignitaries during the event.
