Tirupur: Members of the Hindu Munnani staged a protest against the construction of a milk farm in a temple land at Udhiyur in Tirupur. Condemning their protest, the public staged a counter protest which ended in a lathi charge by the police.

The Uthanda Velayudhasami temple is located at Udhiyur in Tirupur. A private firm ‘Hatsun’ had carried out the construction work for the temple. Meanwhile, the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment (HR&CE) brought a stay order against the construction work. The firm resumed construction work after gaining approval from the Sub-Collector. Condemning this, the Hindu Munnani members protested by lighting a lamp at the temple mountain. A road roko was then staged which was counter-protested by the public who also raised slogans against the Hindu Munnani members, which ended up in a tussle.

All attempts by the police to pacify both sides were in vain, which resulted in the police having to resort to lathicharge to disperse the protesters. A few cars in the vicinity were also damaged. Traffic came to a standstill for nearly an hour on the Kangayam-Palani road.

A case has been registered against 150 people belonging to both groups. Five of them were arrested on charges of damaging cars. Police teams were deployed at the spot, since tension prevailed. SP Kayalvizhi inspected the spot and ordered the police to continue providing security at the place for the next five days.
