Students and government employees in Tamil Nadu have more reason to cheer this festive season, as Pongal holidays has been officially extended to six days.
Following the State Government's announcement of January 14, as an additional holiday, the Pongal holidays have been extended from January 13-17.
With January 12 and 13 being the weekend (Saturday and Sunday), initially January 15, 16 and 17 were declared as holidays for Pongal festivity. Now, with a holiday on January 14, the TN government employees and students get to enjoy a six-day holiday.
Heeding to the requests from various associations stating that a holiday on January 14 would help people spend time with their families in their hometowns during the festival, the government announced the holiday.
Since the holiday was not announced under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, treasuries and sub-treasuries would function with minimal staff, and instructions to this effect had been given to all District Collectors, a G.O. stated.
