Tirupur: People who had queued up in front of co-operative stores in Tirupur to avail Pongal gifts staged protests owing to a halt in the distribution of Pongal gifts midway.
People in Tirupur had thronged co-operative stores in Tirupur to avail the Pongal gifts announced by the State Government. The gift distribution in these stores halted midway citing insufficient cash as a reason, due to which people were disappointed.
The public at Kulathu Pudur staged a protest on Mangalam Road. Likewise, people staged a protest at Andipalayam for the same reason. In KVR Nagar, people laid siege to a ration shop. As people protested in various parts of the district, they had to be consoled with alternative Pongal tokens.
In the meantime, the amount promised by the State Government was quickly transferred to the bank accounts of co-operative stores, following which the Pongal gift distribution resumed.
